jSpace is bringing hip-hop poet Kevin Coval to Portugalia in OB for a night of music, art and entertainment. Kevin Coval, poet, emcee, essayist, activist and educator has performed on four continents in seven Countries; at universities, high schools, and conferences. Coval has shared a stage with Cornel West and Amiri Baraka, opened for Ani Difranco, closed for Ntozake Shange, got down with jazz legends Kahil El'Zabar and Ernest Dawkins, and blessed mics with emcees Bahamadia and Medusa. Co-founder of The Chicago Teen Poetry Festival: Louder Than A Bomb, Coval serves as Artistic Director of Young Chicago Authors, building the hip-hop poetic movement in Chicago and beyond.
Coval’s work looks critically at current cultural and political events and his Jewish identity. He uses hip-hop to wrestle, expose, and explore the impact of whiteness on himself and people of color. His writing balances a certain cultural tension – Coval is someone who uses the format and forum of hip-hop to voice his perspective on the sociopolitical world in which we live. Coval adds his voice to the community of voices constantly clinging to the tattered elements of self and community. Coval re-presents creation, moving back words into the future.
